Many people have to deal with discolored and stained teeth as they grow older, and this can have an adverse effect on their self esteem and confidence. The solution to this is not always as expensive as an in-office whitening treatment, for home teeth whitening is just as effective in modern times.

Home teeth whitening kits can be found in the form of strips, trays and brush applicators. Whitening strips have a gel applied on them and are then placed on the front of the teeth and whiten them. Trays are filled with a bleaching gel and kept in the mouth for hours at a time. Brush applicators are dipped into a bleaching gel and then brushed onto the teeth. All these products contain oxidizing agents, like peroxide that help remove discoloration on the enamel of teeth, and other ingredients that help break down the substance that causes yellowing of the teeth.

These products lighten discoloration in much the same way as in-office whitening, but the concentration of peroxide is less, and it can therefore be applied for longer periods of time, such as overnight, with the use of a bleaching tray. It is an inexpensive method, and many of these products do work as promised with regular application for a significant period of time.

Depending on the kit chosen, the whitening can take place over different periods of time. The first time you will usually see a difference is after two weeks, but some products do give results sooner than that. How long the teeth stays white depends on the user’s oral hygiene and consistent use of the product. Most home teeth whitening kits require that they be placed on the teeth for at least half an hour each day.

The solution to discolored teeth clearly does not need to be expensive with all these home teeth whitening kits available for purchase. With the right oral hygiene and consistent use, they yield great results.
